Your face carries a cranial nerve called the trigeminal nerve. Its V1 branch runs across your forehead, your upper eyelids, and the skin around your eyes.

When the V1 gets cold, your body does something automatic. It shifts out of fight-or-flight and into rest-and-digest. Heart rate drops. The system holding you in 3 a.m. vigilance turns itself down. Your body finally gets the signal to stand down.

It's called the trigeminocardiac reflex. Free-divers use to slow their heart rate at depth. Emergency physicians use it to slow a dangerously fast heart rhythm. Also in therapy to bring someone down from a panic spiral.
